Arne Slot has revealed he wants to become the new Liverpool manager, and is confident an agreement with Feyenoord will be reached.

The Premier League giants are seeking a replacement for Jurgen Klopp, who announced in January that he will be leaving the Reds after nine successful years at Anfield.

Various names have emerged as potential contenders since Klopp's announcement, with Feyenoord boss Slot the latest to be linked.

Liverpool opened talks this week with Feyenoord, and the Dutchman has publicly declared he is ready to take charge of the Merseyside club.

Speaking before Feyenoord's 3-1 Eredivisie win at Go Ahead Eagles on Thursday, Slot told ESPN: "The only thing I can say about it is that the clubs are in negotiations - and then you sit in the waiting room and wait for what will come out.

"It seems clear to me that I would like to go to Liverpool.

"Now I am waiting to see whether the clubs reach an agreement. I have every confidence in that."

Slot added: "The clubs have to do their job and then I am waiting, and as the 'main character' I have to respect that.

"It will undoubtedly become clear in the coming days."

The 45-year-old is one of the most highly-rated managers in Europe and turned down interest from Tottenham last summer,

Slot won the Eredivisie with Feyenoord last season and the KNVB Cup earlier in the current campaign.

Michael Edwards - who recently returned to Liverpool as chief executive of football - and incoming sporting director Richard Hughes are in charge of finding Klopp's replacement.

Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso, a Reds legend from his playing days, had been the early frontrunner for the Liverpool job.

However, his links with an Anfield return were eventually shut down when he committed his future to Bayer Leverkusen.

Sporting Lisbon's Ruben Amorim was the next big name to be linked withthe job, but talkSPORT reported earlier this week that Liverpool's interest had waned.

The odds were even slashed on Jose Mourinho sensationally joining after he was spotted at their 3-1 win over Fulham last weekend.

However, Slot is now firmly in line to take over next season and kickstart a new era at the club.

Should he succeed Klopp, he will follow a man who delivered Premier League, Champions League, Club World Cup, FA Cup and League Cup success.

Slot has the backing of Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, who suggested his playing philosophy could be well suited to the club.

"I find it hard to answer of course, but I think Arne Slot is perhaps one of the better Dutch coaches at this moment," Van Dijk said, following the 2-0 defeat at Everton on Wednesday.

"I think the way of playing and the philosophy he has, that he could be a Liverpool coach.

"Only I think from what I read and hear is that it's still far from being completed. We shall see."
