Reading manager hints at more January signings

Reading manager Jose Gomes has hinted at more potential January arrivals following his side’s 2-1 defeat to Derby County at Pride Park in the Sky Bet Championship.

In a first half where Reading were lucky to have only conceded twice, goals from Duane Holmes and Harry Wilson sent the hosts beaming with confidence going into the interval.

At half-time, substitute Sone Aluko came on for Chelsea loanee Lewis Baker, who was making his first start for the Royals since signing earlier this month, made an instant change to the flow of the game and it was the Nigerian forward who got a goal back for Gomes’ side midway through the second half, his first goal since March.

Baker has not been the only arrival at the Madejski Stadium this month on loan from a top Premier League side, with Ovie Ejaria also starting their last two matches since arriving on a deal until the end of the season from Liverpool.

Asked whether he was hoping that the top-flight duo are not the only incomings this month for the Royals, Gomes admitted that the club are still actively searching in the transfer market.

He said: “We are trying to bring one [or] two players more.

“When the players arrive, I have all the pleasure to talk about that, now I must respect the players that I have.”

Reading’s squad has already dropped in size in the 19 days in which the transfer window has been open, with Josh Sims being recalled by Southampton, David Edwards being released and signing for Shrewsbury Town, Pelle Clement joining PEC Zwolle and five more academy players exiting on loan.

Should Reading complete any of the signings that Gomes alluded too, they could feature when Reading are next in action away at fellow relegation-threatened side Bolton Wanderers in 10 days’ time.
