Graham Potter has rejected an approach from Ajax as he is a 'genuine contender' to replace Erik ten Hag at Manchester United.

That is according to talkSPORT's chief football correspondent Alex Crook, who discussed the Englishman's future after he turned down the job with the Dutch giants.

talkSPORT reported earlier this week how Ajax had reopened talks with the 48-year-old, who previously shut them down earlier this campaign.

And he has again rebuffed interest from the Eredivisie outfit, just as he had done with Leicester in the wake of his Chelsea exit.

Potter hasn't worked since being sacked at Stamford Bridge in April 2023, where he lasted less than seven months in charge.

But despite struggling in west London, he remains held in high regard - especially with United's new investor Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

And Crook has revealed that, should under-fire Ten Hag be replaced, Potter could be next in line for the Red Devils job.

Speaking on the White and Jordan show, Crook said: "He held several rounds of talks with the Dutch giants, he rejected them a month or so ago.

"They managed to get him back to the negotiation table, but once again Graham Potter has said, 'No', to that particular opportunity.

"I think the financial package that Ajax were offering didn't necessarily meet what Potter was looking for.

"But you do get the sense that he's saving himself maybe for something bigger and better in his eyes.

"And you wonder could that be replacing Erik ten Hag at Manchester United?

"He has a fantastic reputation with Sir Jim Ratcliffe, he's got a relationship with Dan Ashworth, who we know is coming in as the sporting director.

"They worked so well together at Brighton, I think Potter is a genuine contender if and when United decide to move on from Ten Hag."

Potter isn't the only manager linked with the possible vacancy at the Theatre of Dreams should Ten Hag be relieved of his duties after two years.

England manager Gareth Southgate has been touted as a possible option, as has former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel.

talkSPORT understands that the German would be keen on a return to England to take over United once he departs Bayern Munich at the end of the season.

Brighton's Roberto De Zerbi is also another potential candidate, as is ex-Bayern and Germany boss Hansi Flick.
