As supporters cleared the area, paramedics and stewards attended the fan in question, with TNT Sports reporting that the spectator had suffered a cardiac arrest.

Following a lengthy spell of treatment, the fan was stretchered out of the stand to the applause of the Aston Villa fans around them who appreciated the prompt medical treatment given.

As a result of the medical emergency, the second period of Villa's clash was delayed, with the second half kicking off at 9:10 pm - ten minutes later than scheduled.

Despite a bright start to the game Ayoub El Kaabi scored twice in 13 minutes to give Olympiacos a shock 2-0 lead before the half-hour mark.

Villa insisted on playing out for the back and came unstuck, suggesting that an upset could have been on the cards.

However Ollie Watkins gave Unai Emery's side a route back into the game before the break.

Once the delayed second half got underway, it only took a few minutes for Moussa Diaby to convert from a tight angle at the Holte End to make it 2-2.

But just as Villa's tails were up, Olympiacos restored their lead when a handball from Douglas Luiz let to El Kaabi grabbing his hat-trick from the penalty spot.

Things then got even worse when Santiago Hezze's long-range effort deflected off Ezri Konsa to make it 4-2 to the Greek side.

Luiz then had the chance to claw one back from the penalty spot, but his effort hit the outside of the post to some up a frustrating night for Villa.

On a more positive note, however, Aston Villa's top four hopes were boosted with Tottenham losing 2-0 to Chelsea, leaving Emery's side seven points clear of the north London side.
