2000 Guineas day tips and race previews

It’s set to be a huge weekend of racing on the Flat, with the first two Classic races of the season due to take place at Newmarket’s Rowley Mile.

Both the 2000 Guineas and the 1000 Guineas are steeped in history, with the mile-long contests giving the three-year-old colts and fillies the chance to prove themselves as the best in their generation.

The colts take centre stage on Saturday in the 2000 Guineas, in which City Of Troy is a short-priced favourite for the all-conquering Aidan O’Brien.

The Irish maestro has won the race a record 10 times already and he’s already hinted that his colt could be one of the best he’s ever trained – though we’re sure we’ve heard that one before…

With nine races to sort through on 2000 Guineas Day 2024, we’ve picked out all the very best 2000 Guineas tips and betting offers and put them together in this handy guide.

2000 Guineas Day race schedule

We’re set for a bumper day of action on 2000 Guineas Day, with no less than nine races scheduled for Saturday afternoon. You can find the full running order for 2000 Guineas Day 2024 at Newmarket below.

2000 Guineas Day 2024 tips and predictions

QIPCO 2000 Guineas Day isn’t going to be one for the faint-hearted, with a bumper schedule of nine races penned in for punters to solve.

There’s a mixture of pattern races and handicaps for bettors to sort through, with the big race due off at 3.35pm. We’ve taken a look at the fields and picked out a tip for you in each race with expert analysis below, including in the Group 1 feature.

QIPCO 2000 Guineas Stakes tips

It’s very difficult to look past City Of Troy, who didn’t put a hoof wrong in his juvenile campaign.

Indeed, his three and a half length success in the Dewhurst Stakes in tricky ground oozed class last October and there seems to be little worry in terms of distance for the son of Justify.

The vibes around his preparation have been good and it’s very difficult to see him being beaten, particularly when you consider that his trainer declared him to be one of the best juveniles he had ever trained last season.

Meanwhile, the competition for places is more open though Notable Speech is fancied to chase the favourite home.

The son of Dubawi arrives here unbeaten and has progressed in each of his three starts so far, winning in good style when conceding weight to the field in a conditions race at Kempton last time.

He has to prove he handles both turf and the track, though he appeals as one who shouldn’t be fazed by that, particularly if there’s a strong pace to aim at.

That pace could perhaps be provided by Rosallion, a classy type who very much wanted to get on with things in his juvenile campaign, including when gamely holding on in the Group 1 Qatar Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere in Paris last autumn. With more to come this term, he’s fancied to complete the placings.

QIPCO 2000 Guineas Stakes trainer overview

City Of Troy is the hot favourite for this year’s race and he is the only representative for Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien, who has trained the winner of the 2000 Guineas a record 10 times.

Three trainers with runners in this year’s 2000 Guineas have won the race in the past. We’ve listed each for you below, with details about their runners on Saturday.

Glorious Angel has been busy so far this year, with five starts on the turf here already, but arrives here on the back of what was arguably a career best performance to strike in a valuable sprint handicap at Ripon last weekend.

She’s been taking her racing really well and it would be no surprise to see her put up another bold bid here.

It’s possible to make a case for the majority of the 16-strong field in this.

The presence of last year’s 2000 Guineas sixth Noble Style means Rohaan arrives here with a nice racing weight and he’s fancied to show his class.

Admittedly, the six-year-old was more miss than hit last year, but he’s a class act when he gets the rub of the green and he arrives here fit after two runs on the all-weather in March.

He’s at his best at Ascot, but he’s just 1lb higher than his last winning mark and has a nice draw in stall 2 when you bear in mind that three of the last four winners have had low draws.

Another of several tricky puzzles to solve. A chance is taken on Lion Of War each-way, who rather fizzled out towards the end of his campaign last term, but showed glimpses of a handicapper on the up in the summer.

Having been gelded over the winter, it would be no surprise should he continue his progression this term for a yard that traditionally does quite well at this meeting.

It’s interesting to see the three-year-old Beautiful Diamond pitched into here against older rivals first time out and she’s fancied to build on a strong juvenile campaign by taking this for Karl Burke.

The daughter of Twilight Son showed plenty of speed when winning a Listed contest on her most recent start at Ayr last September and could prove hard to peg back in receipt of weight from the field.

Maxi King shrugged off a year-long absence when completing a double on return at Ripon last month and a chance is taken on him to complete the hat-trick here.

He’ll have to do so away from heavy ground, though he hasn’t been shaping as though he necessarily needs it to thrive and it would be no surprise should be continue his progression by hitting the frame at the very least for Dominic Ffrench Davis.

Shagraan made a positive start for his new yard when just falling short on return at Sandown last week and he can make amends for that by going one place better this time.

The three-year-old showed some very useful form for Clive Cox last term, hitting the frame in a Listed contest over the summer, and was unlucky to be boxed in last week.

It would be no surprise to see him enjoy a productive campaign for Michael Appleby and he can kickstart that by taking this nice handicap pot.

William Hill “Confined” Handicap tips

The fact that this race is confined to horses who have won no more than once makes it a difficult puzzle to solve, particularly without the presence of market clues at the time of writing.

Rockstar Icon defied a wide draw to open his account at Lingfield in December and it would be no surprise to see him competitive from an opening mark of 80, for a yard that won this 12 months ago.

You’d be forgiven for expecting to see the name of Dr Richard Newland on the card for last week’s Jumps Finale Day at Sandown, but Farasi Lane makes plenty of appeal.

The six-year-old built on a solid reappearance to pick up a sixth career success at Kempton at the beginning of last month, on just his second start for the yard. He’s up 2lbs for that, but a mark of 91 doesn’t feel out of reach and he’s fancied to defy top weight by sealing a double.

About the QIPCO 2000 Guineas 2024

Named after the original amount of prize money, the 2000 Guineas is a race with more than 200 years of history.

Having first been run all the way back in 1809, the race has developed into one of the main litmus tests for three-year-old colts each year and serves as the first of three ‘Classic’ races each year for that generation.

Along with scooping more than a quarter of a million pounds in prize money, the winner of the 2000 Guineas regularly goes on to become the leading horse of their generation and can guarantee themselves a lucrative career at stud once retired.

Some iconic winners of the 2000 Guineas over the years include Frankel (2011), Sea The Stars (2009), Dancing Brave (1986), Brigadier Gerard (1971) and Nijinsky (1970).
